Weird news from BleedingCool, I discovered it just today:

"Yesterday, Bleeding Cool reported how today's Valen The Outcast Joe Jusko 1-200 cover variant was rather… limited. That only 25 were going to qualifying stores who ordered the required amount. And that the rest of the 500 print run would be burned.

Some people thought that was a joke. Well, yesterday, they actually did it. Here we have writer Michael Alan Nelson, Steve Niles and Boom! staffers setting the remaining print run on fire.

Yup, a good old fashioned book burning. And with each flame licking along the stapled edges, those remaining 25 copies get more and more scarce"

here's a video of Michael Alan Nelson burning copies of "Valen the Outcast" #1:

It makes a strange effect recognizing my pages while they're burning.... sigh!

hey Tim!
Well, since they were 1/200 incentive covers, I think they just did it to increase the value of that specific variant cover. Still weird though :D

See....THAT would be funny. It might have made more sense for them to explain the joke, though. :)

well, it was my explanation to that.
Or maybe they just like burning books :D

What I don't get is the point for the burning.

Are the issues worthless because there was no demand for the variant cover? Was it a publicity stunt gone bad?
Couldn't they give the book away to libraries or something?

Whatever the context, it's hard to figure out the point of burning a book, let alone making a spectacle out of it.

Sorry to see your work treated like that, by the way.

Well, it was a 1/200 incentive cover, so one copy was sent for every 200 that got ordered by stores. I think they're doing it just to increase the value of those copies...

It's hard not to feel like that is terribly disrespectful on so many levels.

eheh I have to admit it's pretty sad... but I think it's just an "incentive cover" thing, just to be sure their value stays high... business things, I'm not into that so much :D
